Bubble Leak Testing

Overview

BUBBLE OR VACUUM BOX / LEAK TESTING are non-destructive testing (NDT) methods used to detect leaks, cracks, and pinholes in welded joints, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and pipelines. These methods are widely used in industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical, power plants, shipbuilding, and construction to ensure structural integrity and compliance with industry standards.

  • How it works:
The test involves immersing the item in water and then creating a pressure differential (either by pressurizing the item or creating a vacuum around it).

  • Detecting leaks:
If a leak exists, air or gas will escape through the leak, forming bubbles on the surface of the water.

  • Applications:
Bubble leak testing is commonly used in industries like healthcare, food, and pharmaceuticals to ensure the integrity of packaging and prevent contamination.

  • Types of bubble leak testing:
There are different types of bubble testing techniques, such as bubble emission testing, direct-pressure, and vacuum-box technique.

  • Limitations:
While simple and effective, bubble leak testing can have limitations, such as the inability to detect very small leaks and the destructive nature of the test.
