Air-coupled Ultrasonic Inspections

Air-coupled Ultrasonic Inspections

Compared to conventional contact nondestructive testing methods the advantage of air-coupling is that the inspection can be performed 100 % contact-free. Sensitive materials do not get exposed to couplant liquids such as water, gel or oil. In addition, complicated cleaning processes become obsolete.

Accordingly, this innovative testing method is suited especially for the inspection of modern composite materials as they are used in several industries such as automotive, aerospace, ship building, machine building and sports and leisure goods. The applications and structures are highly diverse and can be developed further constantly.

Modern inspection solutions have to be flexible in order to keep track with the rapid development of new materials, structures and applications. More than 25 years of experience, a close connection to a large amount of network partners in research and science, a strong R&D department and a flexible in-house production make SONOTEC a competent partner for the realization of your testing application.

Already during the material development of modern composite materials such as glass or carbon fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP, CFRP) and ceramics it is necessary to detect internal structures and discontinuities fast and reliably.

Research institutes, industrial development laboratories and quality assurance departments of production facilities highly appreciate a contactless, high resolution inspection. The performance of the transmitter receiver system is very important to penetrate these highly attenuating materials. The ultrasonic transducers, the scanning area and the software can be adapted to the specific geometry and material composition of the test object.

These high requirements can be fulfilled with the new and modular SONOAIR inspection system for laboratory and quality assurance applications.

The high performing probes of the SONOSCAN CF series have been designed for couplant-free material testing. Due to their stainless steel housing the probes are extremely rugged and maintenance free. Currently the portfolio comprises frequencies from 50 to 400 kHz. In addition to these standard specifications customized probes with the following features can be realized as well:

  • Outstanding acoustic characteristics
  • Your technical requirements
  • Reasonable price performance ratio
